Pennsylvania, United States: American domination of the US Amateur Championship has continued for another year. For the second straight year, all eight quarter-finalists were from the United States, an eventuality that had not occurred since 2004.
The Asia-Pacific region’s hopes of mounting a challenge at Oakmont Country Club were extinguished in the Round-of-32 with the elimination of China’s Jin Bo.
For the second day in succession, Jin had faced a tense overnight wait before attempting to maintain his progress at the 121st edition of the championship.
When play was called off for the day on Wednesday, Jin was one-up through 12 holes of his Round-of-64 clash with American Sam Murphy. Returning on Thursday morning, Jin held his nerve to complete a one-up victory that booked him a Round-of-32 match against Jacob Bridgeman.
When play was suspended for the day at 6:35 pm on Thursday, Jin and Bridgeman were locked together at all-square through 17 holes.
Bridgeman required only one hole on Friday morning to progress, a birdie on 18 giving him a one-up victory against Jin, who was competing in his third US Amateur.
In the last 16, Bridgeman was thrashed 6 and 4 by Austin Greaser, 82nd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
In Saturday’s semi-finals, Greaser will take on Travis Vick (WAGR 45) while James Piot (WAGR 86) faces Nick Gabrelcik (WAGR 28).
