Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Local talent Mirabel Ting powered her way to a commanding victory in the 46th Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open Championship.

The long-hitting 18-year-old was in superb form as she tamed RSGC’s par-73 East Course with rounds of 68, 70 and 69 for a 12-under-par 207 total, five shots clear of runner-up Ng Jing Xuen. The result was a reversal of last week’s Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open at Templer Park Country Club when Ting finished five strokes behind Ng.

“Last week I lost a lot of shots and didn’t play well, so I definitely learnt a lot. After the five-under-par in round one, I felt really confident,” said Ting.

Having completed a successful freshman year on the US collegiate circuit with Augusta University, Ting is transferring to Florida State University for her sophomore year and will be flying back later this month. The RSGC title was her third during the collegiate off-season, following victories in the TSM Golf Challenge at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club and Vietnam Ladies Amateur Open at Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc.

"I'm grateful for all the support given by my mum and grandfather. And my father, who’s no longer around, but I believe he's happy that I won this week. I’d like to thank my swing coach, Wilson Choo, who's been giving me so much support," said Ting, who played in the 2019 Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific in Japan when she was just 14.

Ting is currently ranked 56th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), just three rungs below compatriot Jeneath Wong.

Ng, the 2023 SEA Games individual gold medallist, carded scores of 67, 73 and 72 for a seven-under-par 207 total, putting the 15-year-old four shots clear of Indonesia’s Sania Talita Wahyudi who fell off the pace with a closing 77. Wahyudi is the reigning girls’ champion of the RSGC-SportExcel Junior Invitational Championship, which was played on the same course last month.

Malaysian Liyana Durisic was fourth on two-under 216, five shots ahead of compatriots Winnie Ng and Wang Xin Yao. Ng won this event the last time it was staged in 2019,

One of the highlights of the championship was the hole-in-one scored by Normila Sulaiman at the par-three 12th during round one, which earned her a Titoni watch.

Tournament Co-Organising Chair Stella Chau was elated at the event’s return following a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are so pleased to able to hold this championship again. I hope that all the players had a tournament to remember and that they will keep coming back to participate,” said Chau.

Established in 1893, RSGC is the oldest active golf club in Malaysia and the fourth oldest in Asia. Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the 36-hole club is surrounded by towering skyscrapers and has been the venue for numerous international tournaments such as the Putra Cup, Nomura Cup, Malaysian Open, Malaysian Masters and the Maybank Championship.
