Jakarta, Indonesia: The Indonesian golfing community is mourning the passing of Murdaya Poo.

A prominent and influential figure on the Indonesian golfing scene, Poo, founder of palm oil-to-property conglomerate Central Cipta Murdaya, has died at the age of 84,

The death of the billionaire was confirmed by the Representative Council of Indonesian Buddhist Communities (Walubi), where he served as the head of the supervisory board.

An avid golfer, Poo also served as President of the Indonesia Golf Association for two terms, from 2014 through to 2022. He also acted as President Director at Jakarta's Pondok Indah Golf Course, one of Indonesia's foremost golf clubs that hosted the World Cup of Golf in 1983.

According to media reports in Jakarta, the tycoon died following complications related to cancer.

In a text message to Forbes Asia, Poo’s close friend Tahir, founder of the Mayapada Group, said: “He (Poo) is a great businessman since the Soeharto era. A pioneer. He and his wife are great people, worthy to be remembered.”

Taimur Hassan Amin, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, said: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Murdaya Poo. He made significant contributions to golf in Indonesia. God bless him and give the family the strength to bear this loss."

Poo started out selling newspapers at a young age before becoming a successful businessman.

His family’s main source of wealth is their stake in listed property company Metropolitan Kentjana. The company developed high-end residential complex Pondok Indah in South Jakarta and other projects in Jakarta and Batam.

Poo was also known to own Jakarta International Expo, one of the city's biggest convention centers.

Poo is survived by his wife Siti Hartati Murdaya and their four children.
