Vegas, Nevada, United States: Kim Si-woo is in a positive frame of mind heading into THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK this week.
The former Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship participant is among an 11-strong Korean contingent at the US$9.75 million showpiece, which was moved from its home base of Korea to Shadow Creek in Vegas due to on-going challenges caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
With an 18-under-par total of 266, Kim tied for eighth at last week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin. It was his first top-10 of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season and has provided a timely boost to his confidence.
“The most important thing is to keep it on the fairways because I’m feeling confident with my iron play. If I can focus on that, I think I’ll have good results,” said the 25-year-old following a practice round at Shadow Creek.
Kim, the 2017 Players champion, added: “Last week I didn't really have a clear goal in mind, I just wanted to play well and make the cut and then on the weekend do what I wanted to do, and I felt like I was able to do that last week and it ended up with good results.
“This week I'm trying to do the same. Even though there's no cut, play well for four days, persevere, really focus on what I learned and hopefully that can translate into even a top 10 finish or even better.”
It was in 2011, as a fresh-faced 16-year-old, that Kim lined up in the third edition of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
While Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama emerged triumphant at the Singapore Island Country Club, Kim had to content himself with a share of 46th place.
Matsuyama is also in the field at Shadow Creek.
