Jeju Island, Korea: Cho Woo-young underlined his credentials as a potential Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) winner with a stunning performance against the Asian Tour’s leading players in the International Series Korea.

Rising to the challenge at Lotte Skyhill Country Club on Jeju Island, Cho posted a joint seventh-place finish, highlighted by a scintillating 10-under-par 61 on day three.

It’s a result that’s certain to boost his confidence as he builds up to the 13th edition of the AAC at Thailand’s Amata Spring Country Club in the last week of October.

“Playing a pro event is just a different level,” said the 20-year-old, winner of the Korean Amateur Championship in 2020 and joint third at last year’s AAC in Dubai.

In Jeju, Cho lit up the tournament with the best round of the week, made up of four birdies on the front and six on the back, including five birdies in the last six holes. It was the lowest 18-hole score of the season on the Asian Tour, but as preferred lies were being played it could not count officially.

Cho, who began the week in 382nd place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, said: “I didn’t play well the first two days so it was great to play well (in the third round).

“My driver is always my best club and I also managed to get the putter going. It’s my best round in a tournament but not my best-ever round, I shot 12 under once in a tournament in Thailand.”
