Ajman, United Arab Emirates: Jamie Camero has climbed 41 spots in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) after emerging triumphant in the Emirates Golf Federation’s (EGF) 2024 Order of Merit Championship.

In a thrilling finale at Al Zorah Golf Club, Camero claimed top honours after edging out Intissar Rich at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off.

“I’m just pleased with the win. I hit a lot of good shots – but my bad shots were not very good,” said 18-year-old Camero, who ended the 54-hole event tied with Rich on seven-over 223.

It was a continuation of Camero’s excellent form over the past 17 months during which she’s won no fewer than seven WAGR-recognised tournaments, including the Faldo Series Middle East Championship and Faldo Series Grand Final.

She also topped the leaderboard at the UAE World Amateur Junior Championship and the women’s section at the FJT Middle East Championship.

Camero also gave a good account of herself at the sixth Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific at Thailand’s Siam Country Club in February where she comfortably made the cut and ended in a share of 48th place among the region’s elite.

While Camero has risen to 401st in the WAGR, with her runner-up finish at Al Zorah Rich improved her position by 95 places to 890th.

Both Camero and Rich will have opportunities to further improve their standings in the coming months when they’ll represent the Emirates Golf Federation in a number of championships (professional and amateur) in Europe.

Meanwhile, the men’s category at the EGF’s 2024 Order of Merit Championship also required a play-off after Dominic Morton and Viktor Kofod Olsen finished the regulation 54 holes tied on even-par 216.

Morton was a model of consistency, carding scores of 73, 71 and a closing 72. He began the final round three strokes behind Olsen, but eventually prevailed thanks to a birdie at the first extra hole.

“I was pleased with my game – I was confident with my golf this week,” 18-year-old Morton told the Khaleej Times.

“I have practised very hard over the last few weeks and this is my first EGF WAGR tournament win,” added Morton, who is due to begin a golf scholarship at Odessa University in Texas in August.

In the Junior Division (18-year-olds and under), Simon Astorm’s 36-hole total of two-under 142 gave him a one-stroke success from Thomas Buchard.

With an aggregate of 152, Daul Kim posted a six-stroke win over Sophia Zbiri in the Girls Division.
