San Diego, United States: Meeting Rory McIlroy proved a more nerve-racking experience for Yuka Saso than lining up the winning putt at last week’s US Women’s Open.

Fresh from her maiden Major triumph at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, the 19-year-old from the Philippines had the chance to spend some time with McIlroy, the player on whom she has modelled her swing.

“Meeting Rory, I was more nervous. I didn't know how to say ‘hi’. But he was so nice. He was so kind. He was so open. When I asked him a question, he was so honest. I hope I can ask him more advice,” said Saso, winner of the individual and team gold medals at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018, the year in which she was also runner-up to Atthaya Thitikul in the inaugural Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific.

Taking a break from her schedule, Saso made the trip to Torrey Pines, where the US Open is taking place this week, to thank McIlroy for the social media support he gave her last week.

“When I arrived, I went to the driving range to find Rory, but he was on the golf course. So, we went to the golf course and walked with him for three holes.

“He let me go inside the ropes. That was really great. I talked to him about things. I can't share it with you guys. I want to keep it with me,” said Saso.

“I only followed him for three holes, and I didn't really want to bother him. It's a very important tournament. Maybe someday if he has the free time, if we can talk maybe more, then I will ask him (for swing tips),” added Saso, who was awed at seeing other big names.

“I saw Phil (Mickelson) activating his calves, and I saw Jordan Spieth. I saw the great players. It's been a great day, and I’m thinking to come back tomorrow morning before I fly back to Atlanta.”

When she departs San Diego, Saso’s thoughts will turn to next week’s KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the third Major of the LPGA Tour season.

“I'll have to focus on my practice starting maybe tomorrow or maybe the day after tomorrow. Yeah, I need to focus on my tournament,” she said.
