San Diego, United States: Harry Takis, Australia’s top-ranked male amateur, has wrapped up his US college season with two standout achievements.
Now ranked 32nd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the Queenslander, who is in his second year at San Diego State University (SDSU), has been named Golfer of the Year in the Mountain West Conference.
The reigning Singapore Open Amateur champion who placed fourth at last year’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Dubai, finished his 2026 US college season with a 69.23 scoring average. That was more than one stroke better than the previous San Diego State men’s golf team record, and is ranked fifth in the NCAA Division One individual standings.
Takis’s career 70.29 scoring average over his first two seasons is also number one in SDSU recorded history with his 2026 campaign featuring 17 rounds in the 60s out of the 30 he played.
By comparison, two-time professional Major winner Xander Schauffele (71.50) is third in the SDSU career standings.
“The sophomore season was special,” Takis said on Instagram. “Keen to run it back with my guys for two more.”
Adding to his achievements, Takis, who was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2025, also made the 11-man all-MW team. The major awards and all-conference team are voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches.
In his 10 tournaments this season, Takis had his maiden collegiate victory at the Southwestern Invitational, two runner-up finishes, five top-five efforts, six top-10 showings and eight top-20 placings.
Earlier this month, the Australian representative was named to the international team for the Arnold Palmer Cup in July and he is also one of 10 semi-finalists for the Ben Hogan Award which is presented annually to the top men’s college golfer.
Takis is supported by Golf Australia through its High Performance Programme.
