SGA President Hails Return of National Open

Singapore: Singapore Golf Association (SGA) President Tan Chong Huat has hailed the announcement of the return of the Singapore Open to the Asian golfing calendar.

After a three-year hiatus, the Singapore Open will make an eagerly-awaited return to the schedule when it tees-off at the New Course at Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) from November 6-9 as part of the International Series.

Sanctioned by the SGA and Asian Tour, the US$2 million event will be title-sponsored by Kweichow Moutai.

Tan said: “The Singapore Open is about to embark on an exciting new cycle and we are looking forward to working with our partners, the Asian Tour and Kweichow Moutai, to continue the legacy of our national Open.

“Our national Open is one of Singapore’s premier sporting events, and we are overjoyed it is returning to the calendar this year with a dynamic new title sponsor at one of the country’s most acclaimed golfing venues, Singapore Island Country Club.”

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour, said: “The Singapore Open is an integral part of Asian Tour history and one of our most-prized tournaments – so we are thrilled it is returning to our schedule this year. The story of the Singapore Open runs in parallel with that of the Tour and, in many respects, we have grown hand-in-hand.

“It is now set for another exciting new chapter, and we are grateful to Kweichow Moutai for paving the way for the tournament’s return. They will be an ambitious partner who understand the importance of the Singapore Open past, present and future.

“Our thanks also go to the Singapore Golf Association and Singapore Island Country Club for helping to facilitate the return of this magnificent tournament. With it set to be staged during the closing stretch of the season our members and fans in the region can look forward to a memorable climax.”

Ian Roberts, General Manager at SICC, said: “We are delighted to welcome the return of the Singapore Open to the venue where it all started in 1961. The Singapore Open has given fans, both locally and internationally, many unforgettable memories, especially with the thrilling drama and action that have unfolded over the years.

“We are confident our New Course will provide the players with a stern test of golf while captivating fans again with another week of top-class golf action.”

Inaugurated in 1961, the Singapore Open was part of Asia’s first professional golf circuit, which comprised tournaments in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan. It will return to the venue where the tournament was first played in 1961 until 1987.

Among the Singapore Open’s illustrious list of champions are the late Kyi Hla Han (1994), Adam Scott (2005, 2006, 2010), Jeev Milkha Singh (2008), Ian Poulter (2009), Sergio Garcia (2018) and Matt Kuchar (2020).

The SICC’s New Course played host to the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in 2023 when Thailand's Eila Galitsky emerged triumphant.
