In-Form Iwanaga Triumphs at Torrey Pines

California, United States: Anna Iwanaga continued her stunning run of form with an extra-time victory in the USWING MOJING Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines.

In an exciting finale, Iwanaga defeated Australian Amelia Harris at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to claim her fourth title of 2025 – and cement her position as the leading Japanese in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

Over the North Course at Torrey Pines, Iwanaga and Harris posted matching 54-hole totals of six-under-par 210.

Iwanaga appeared to be out of contention after an opening 75 but atoned with a brilliant eight-under 64 on day two to move to the top of the leaderboard. She closed with a 71.

For her part, Harris opened with a 72 and followed with two 69s.

Iwanaga began the week in 39th position in the WAGR on the back of wins this year in the Japan High School Spring Championship, the Royal Junior and the Kansai Women’s Amateur.

Additionally, she was runner-up at the Japan Women’s Amateur and fourth at the Toyota Junior World Cup.

The strength in depth of the Asia-Pacific was underlined by the fact that the top seven finishers in the Girls’ 15-18 at Torrey Pines were all from the region.

One shot off the pace in a share of third place were the Japanese duo of Yuka Nishina and Rina Sato with Korean Kim Ein a further stroke back in fifth.

Akane Motomura of Japan and Indian Mahreen Bhatia were joint sixth on 213.

Players from the Asia-Pacific enjoyed success in all five age group categories for girls.

In the 13-14 segment, Indian Ananyaa Sood edged Japan’s Rinka Iwanaga in a play-off. Thai Pinyaphat Kamolborvorn was joint third with Japan’s Hina Takeda.

Winner of the Girls’ 11-12 was Japan’s Ayaka Motomura with Thailand’s Boonyarat Kantha topping the standings in the Girls’ 9-10 and Ran Ozawa of Japan leading the way in the Girls’ 7-8.

Among the boys, China’s Xu Chengrui (11-12), Thai Andy Srisangwarn (9-10) and Australian Hugo Smith (7-8) all won their respective categories.
