China's Li Leads Asia-Pacific Challenge at Nairn

St Andrews, Scotland: China’s Li Menghan, Australian Jazy Roberts and Indian Mannat Brar are among a stellar field that has assembled at The Nairn Golf Club for The 122nd Women’s Amateur Championship (June 10-15).

In total, there are six Asia-Pacific representatives in the 144-strong starting line-up for what is one of the leading championships in amateur golf for females.

Li, Roberts and Brar all made the cut in this year’s Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in Vietnam and will be targeting places in the match play segment of this week’s championship.

The first two days (tomorrow and Wednesday) are set aside for stroke play with the top 64 players after 36 holes advancing to the match play stage from Thursday to Sunday.

Currently 110th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Li has had a busy year to date. As well as placing 17th at the WAAP, she’s posted three top-10 finishes on the China LPG Tour.

She was joint also runner-up at The Royal Junior in Japan in April and sixth in the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Girls’ Championship in Hong Kong a fortnight ago.

Australian Queen Sirikit Cup representative Roberts, 127th in the WAGR, has performed consistently this year, highlighted by a joint-fourth finish at the WAAP.

Like Roberts, reigning All India Ladies Amateur champion Brar played solidly at both the WAAP and Queen Sirikit and will also draw on the experience she gained when finishing third in last year’s R&A Girls’ Amateur. Brar is 431st in the WAGR.

Other Asia-Pacific players in the field are Korean Judy Joo and Australians Celine Chan and Momo Sugiyama.

Joo, 249th in the WAGR, has won two events on the R&A Student Tour, in Sweden last year and Spain in 2025, while Sugiyama (153rd in the WAGR) and Chen (382nd) are both in college in the United States.

Inaugurated in 1893, the Women’s Amateur Championship annually attracts an international field with an impressive list of former winners including McCormack Medal winner Leona Maguire and Major champions Georgia Hall and Anna Nordqvist.

The winner of this year’s championship will gain entry to the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl (July 31-August 3), the US Women’s Open, The Amundi Evian Championship and, by tradition, will earn an invitation to compete at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. The champion will also be invited to play in an event on the Ladies European Tour.

The field includes four of the top-10 in the WAGR – Americans Catherine Park (seventh), Farah O’Keefe (eighth) and Jasmine Koo (10th) and Spain’s Paula Martin Sampedro (ninth).
