New Film Explores Fine Margins that Shape Careers

Lahinch, Ireland: A new documentary released by The R&A tells the remarkable story of two Walker Cup players whose careers took very different paths after meeting at Royal Aberdeen in 2011.
 
MARGINS, a 27-minute film released ahead of the 51st Walker Cup at Lahinch, explores the fine margins that can shape the careers of even the most talented amateur golfers through the contrasting journeys of James Byrne and Jordan Spieth.
 
Byrne defeated the then teenage Spieth as Great Britain and Ireland secured a memorable 14-12 victory over the United States of America. Both were among the leading amateurs of their generation, but what happened next was very different.
 
Spieth went on to become one of the world’s leading players, winning three Major championships before his 24th birthday. Byrne, runner-up in The 115th Amateur Championship a year before the Walker Cup, followed a different path in the professional game.
 
In in-depth interviews, both players look back on their experiences of the Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen and reflect on the opportunities, decisions and circumstances that can influence a player’s career after competing at the highest level of amateur golf.
 
“I played well at the right time”, said Spieth when commenting on how the Walker Cup shaped his career and his own belief.
 
“It made me believe and it didn’t go away for a long time. It just built and built and built and then that’s what came of it. There are a lot of amazing players. What separates them is often times very small margins.”
 
For Byrne, the significance of competing in the Walker Cup remains clear, despite the very different paths the two players subsequently took and how success can take different forms depending on the individual and the path they ultimately follow.
 
“When you played in the Walker Cup, you don’t know what’s coming. You don’t know if you’re going to have a career playing Majors or Ryder Cups,” said Byrne.
 
“At that time, it’s the biggest thing in the world. It’s the best thing I’ve done in my golf career by far.
 
“Success in golf; I think it’s very individual. Other people can’t define your success. You can’t just go on Wikipedia and see somebody’s stats and wins and rankings and say: ‘This person’s been successful or not’. I think it’s what you perceive it to be yourself. It all depends on the context.”
 
Their story provides the central theme of MARGINS – what separates players capable of competing against one another at Walker Cup level and the different journeys their careers can subsequently take.
 
The documentary also features Tommy Fleetwood, Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Russell Henley and Harris English reflecting on their own Walker Cup experiences and the significance of representing their countries in one of amateur golf’s most historic matches.
 
With the 51st Walker Cup taking place at Lahinch from September 5-6, MARGINS also looks at the what the experience could mean for the next generation’s careers in the years ahead.
