Double Delight for Koreans in Malaysian Amateur Opens

Johor, Malaysia: Lee Sung-ho and Lee Hyo-song scored a double success for Korea at the 118th Malaysian Amateur Open men’s and ladies’ championships.

Two shots behind pace-setting compatriot Pi Seung-hyun heading into the final round at Palm Resort Golf & Country Club, Lee Sung-ho surged to the top of the leaderboard with a closing two-under-par 70.

With a 72-hole total of five-under 283, Lee ended four strokes clear of Pi in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR)-counting event.

Singapore national squad members Ryan Ang (288) and Daryl Low (289), the joint half-way leaders with Pi, finished third fourth respectively with Indonesian Randy Arbenata Mohamad Bintang alone in fifth on 291.

Two shots further back in joint sixth were Elee Salyh Bisera from the Philippines and Malaysian Zia Izzuddeen Abdul Rashid.

On the back of his victory, Lee soared 1,330 places in the WAGR to 2,193rd. Pi, meanwhile, rose 244 spots to 1,095th.

In the women’s event, Lee Hyo-song proved too strong for her rivals, racing to a wire-to-wire success with four successive sub-par returns of 70, 69, 69 and 69.

With an 11-under aggregate of 277, Lee ended six shots in front of runner-up Rianne Mikhaela Malixi of the Philippines. Singapore’s Aloysa Atienza was third on 286.

Lee and Malixi were among three players in a share of third place in November’s Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific at Thailand’s Siam Country Club.

Lee moved up 29 places in the WAGR to 131st, while Malixi climbed 12 spots to 159th.

The top Malaysians in the ladies’ division were Mirabel Ting and Geraldine Wong Xiao Xuan who were joint sixth on four-over 292.
